Master Hattori became 80 years old a few years ago. In Japan, a person’s 80th birthday is commemorated with a special celebration called 傘寿 / Sanjyu. To celebrate his special anniversary year, and also his proud achievements as a Master craftsman, Hattori decided they would produce a Special Limited Edition Collection of knives called the 傘 San Series. 

The Hattori 傘 San Series knife collection will feature special, very limited production models, which Master Hattori can no longer produce in large quantities due to the rarity or limited availability of handle materials or blade materials.

For the 111th version of the Hattori "SAN" Limited edition" 80th anniversary celebration knives, Master Hattori has selected the KD30-1 Cowry X Damascus Hunter with Classic Stacked Leather Washer handle. Hattori has fond memories and a real passion for the classic, traditional taste and design of Stacked Leather Washer Handles, so he wanted to use this type of handle for this special limited edition knife. The KD30-1 Cowry X Damascus blade is one of our favorites, the large blade features an elongated Clip Point, with Swedge, and Hattori’s beautiful and unique Vortex pattern layered Damascus.

Serial No. “～01-3～” is engraved on the Nickel Silver Hilt. It is one of just  three Hattori Special Memorial Limited Edition knives produced in the year 2024.

Important Information about Large Size Cowry X Damascus Blade Knife Collections

As you may already know, Hattori craftsmen manually hand sharpen every KD Cowry X Damascus knife with whetstones, in a very, very time consuming process. This is especially true when Hattori crafts Cowry X Damascus knives with large blades, which each require a tremendous amount of time and energy. Due to Hattori’s limited production capacity, and the increased entire running cost, it has become necessary to increase the price of these premium KD Cowry X Damascus knives with large-sized blades.

Indeed, the number of Hattori knives (Especially KD Cowry X Damascus knives) being produced has decreased a lot during the last decade. Each year, Hattori can only make a very limited quantity of Cowry X Damascus knives, especially when crafting these large-sized blades.
