Aichi Tool Steel and Hitachi began producing ATS-34 as a replacement for Crucible 154CM in the 1970’s, when Crucible stopped production. These fine-grained Chromium Molybdenum stainless alloys were very popular high-end cutlery steels in the 1980’s and 1990’s because they offer an appealing mixture of edge sharpness, edge holding, corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening.
The famous knife maker Robert 'Bob' Waldorf Loveless favored ATS-34 and 154CM and they inspired the development of Damasteel RWL34 powdered metallurgy steel, which is named after him.
