The original Bowie knife is said to have been created by James Black in the early 1800’s for Jim Bowie, a famous American knife fighter. Jim developed a number of different Bowie knife designs, but they typically had a large fixed blade of 8-12 inches / 200-300 mm in length, a curved clip point (Often double-edged or false-edged) and a brass cross guard to protect the user’s hand.
Bowie knives have been a favorite of outdoorsmen and soldiers for many years and in Word War II the United States Marine Corps officially adopted a Ka-Bar knife that was inspired by Jim’s knives.
