Unlike most contemporary Western pruning shears and secateurs, traditional Japanese pruning shears have a one-piece forged handle and blade, which uses soft iron or mild steel for the handle and a forge welded layer of high carbon steel.
The cutting edge stays sharp for a long time and, with a little camellia oil and careful maintenance, Japanese pruning shears should last for many years. Both the joint surfaces and the blades are carefully finished and adjusted for effortless cutting and the extremely sharp blades cut through plant stems very cleanly.
